About Louis Louis Second Time Around
I have been a follower of Louis Vuitton since I was six years old.
During much of my life Louis Vuitton did not have a presence in New Zealand and his products could only be purchased while on Overseas Travel to specific destinations where Louis Vuitton Stores were situated..
As this did not fit into my life I started my collection late. While I do have many items brought direct from the Louis Vuitton Store in Queen St, Auckland (and am happy to pass on my favourite SA) some of the more collectable items have been purchased Pre-Loved.
This led me to carefully research every pre-loved purchase and I have gathered knowledge along with my collection.
Louis Vuitton began making trunks while he worked as a wardrobe packer for Empress Eugenie, packing and shipping her enormous wardrobe, not only from the palace in Paris to the Palace at Versailles, but for official and unofficial visits to royalty and family all over Europe.
Louis Vuitton opened his first store in Paris at 4 rue Neuve-des-Capucines in 1854
The first recorded design is a rounded top Trunk in Grey Canvas for Empress Eugenie and other Crowned Heads and Aristocrats.
By 1858 the company had introduced the very first Flat Trunks, with flat lids for stacking covered in grey Canvas for weather proofing. In 1859 Louis Vuitton moved his workshop to 18 rue du Congres, in nearby Asnieres.
In 1875 House Louis Vuitton was producing specialised luggage for long distance travellers and expeditions. For these Clients he produced the famous wardrobe trunk, a vertical Armoire with two fitted out halves. And a camp-bed trunk in mid 1860's that folded out in to what we recognise as a camp stretcher.
Many of the early Trunks were covered in a tri coloured striped waterproof canvas, but in 1888 Louis son Georges (who had taken over the Business and launched the first London Store) designed the brown and beige checkerboard pattern we now recognise as Damier. Georges was also responsible for the invention of a five tumbler lock with a unique set of numbered keys.
Around 1910, the beginnings of the now famous Monogram Print appeared.
Many specialty items were produced for Artists, Scholars and heads of State. In 1925 a shoe secretary was designed for the Opera Singer Lily Pons, to contain 36 pairs of Shoes!
The fantastic quality of Louis Vuitton products means that a handbag with over 20years of service may still look as good as new!
As the leather ages, provided it has been cared for, it assumes a wonderful warm patina. The Canvas remains flexible, is completely washable, hardwearing and versatile.
